This weeks T.G.I.F. featured artist is Skyler, a 19 year old pop/rock singer from York, Maine. Learn more about Skyler from the Q&A below! Be sure to check his tunes out on his website. SUR: How did the band come together?Michael, Adam, and I were already writing songs together, so it was an easy fit for them to join the band. I met John at Berklee College of Music and became fast friends. We bonded over the fact that we were the only two guys at Berklee that really liked Taylor Swift. We started doing some shows together and he joined the band shortly after. We went through a number of drummers of until the Summer of 2010 when Mark joined the band. SUR: How’d you come up with your name?Skyler is my name. The name of the band is only used live, “Skyler and the Band of Thieves.” Kind of like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is only used at live shows. SUR: What bands/artists are you influenced by?The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Who, Green Day, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, etc. SUR: How would you describe your music for people who have never heard it before?A mixture of pop, rock, and country. The male response to Taylor Swift. SUR: What makes your band different from all the other ones out there? We bring a type of songwriting and performing that is currently underrepresented in Pop music. About a month ago, I received a press packet from a young artist named Skyler in the mail. We usually receive submissions for featured artist posts via email so it was refreshing to see a tangible CD and accompanying press information. Technology is amazing; it’s helped me discover countless artists from across the globe but actual mail and CDs, rather than emails and mp3s, are the best. Opening a big manila envelope made me reminisce about the days when my old bandmates and I would create press packets to send to radio stations, clubs, bars, review sites, etc. Already getting good vibes about this kid. Hailing from York, Maine, Skyler’s country-pop sound and lyrical tendencies remind me of the male version of Taylor Swift. His fifth CD (yes, I said fifth at just 19) “Long Gone,” has been positively reviewed by critics, one even naming Sklyer a breakout artist to watch out for in 2011. Check out Skyler and decide for yourself. Kid’s on point. LINK: http://cavataclothing.com/featured-artist-skyler

By: Kat Acott Skyler is an unsigned artist whose music really portrays his passion and determination. From as early as elementary school, the star from York, ME, was performing in the playground to his classmates on a makeshift stage. His bedroom was quickly transformed into a recording studio and by the time High School had ended the multi-instrumentalist had released his first full-length CD. Skyler’s music became a vital part of his life. Pursuing his dream, he spent a year at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. After 20 professional theatre productions and over 250 gigs, the result is a sound you can’t help but love! Putting acoustic/pop sounds in a fresh perspective, his sound is hard to compare to any artist before him. However, his new EP, Long Gone, has taken more of a rock vibe. Skyler is gaining fans with every show he performs, and I for one, am definitely hooked! Currently, he’s performing all around the US, so if you want a slice of playground jam you can check out his full list of upcoming shows on his MySpace. His brand new Long Gone EP was recorded and produced by Jonathan Wyman (Halo Studios) and mastered by Adam Ayan (Gateway Mastering), and is available to listen to on MySpace and can be downloaded on iTunes. If you haven’t already, be one of the first to check this up-and-coming artist out! I predict it won’t be long until everyone has heard his unique sound. LINK: http://thesoundalarm.com/?p=5135
